All the Office fans – I know this is a no-brainer. We can all agree that this series is undisputedly the best series ever made in American TV history. But let’s not take this for granted. As fans of the folks from Dunder Mifflin, we ought to make the world a better place by introducing more people to “The Office”. I can’t think of a higher calling in my life other than this. Let’s get to it.
In an ideal world, I would write one of those listicles like 14671829 reasons why you should watch “The office” but then as we know the world is anything but ideal and listicles suck.
N reasons why you should leave the series you are watching now and start watching “The Office”. Yes, you need to cheat on your current favourite series. It is worth it. Let me tell you why:
- The Office (US Version!) is the best.
- The End.
I know you won’t take my word for it. I wish you did. I wish everyone did. But again like I said this world isn’t ideal. I wonder which one is. Anyway, that’s a different tangent to worry about in a different dimension. Coming back to the topic. Finally, here are the reasons. This time for real. Brace yourself for a ride. Drumroll. *Unrealistic hype building*. *People waiting with unabated breath” *Nobody gives a fuck in real life
Steve Carell before he became ‘Steve Carell’ was in “The Office”. His penchant for comedy and his phenomenal range is in full display. His character, “Michael Scott” is one of the most endearing (read douchebag) characters of all time. Without him, the series stands on its own (some office fans will disagree) but let’s face it Michael Scott is legendary. It is an absolute treat to watch the master in action. Watch the serie]s just for him. You won’t regret it. And it will introduce you to the world where “That’s what she said” isn’t just a phrase anymore.
There are multiple storylines embedded in the series. We have love stories, character arcs, and all what you expect from a good show. But when you see it from a different perspective, there is no coherent storyline. We have a set of quirky characters in a series of gigs they perform in an office set up. So much like life nothing untoward happens constantly but in the monotony of it there is so much joy expressed and felt. Makes little sense? Well, it’s okay. You will get it. While watching the first season, you will feel like “Seriously this is what everyone raves about”? You need to stick with it to get rewarded for the rest of your life.
One episode has this epic scene in it. This is one of the (if not the) funniest scene ever crafted in a TV show. Watch this and thank me later.
When was the last time you loved every character of a series? We all have our favourites and don’t really care about the fringe characters. In this series, you will fall in love with each and every quirky and weird character. You will love to hate some of them and will adore others. Each have their own madness and together the madness gets quadrupled.
Ask any sane critic (are any of them sane?) of the movie/TV world, who is the most important person on the set? If they say the actor, you can ignore them and put them ‘do not follow’ list. If they say “Writers”, take them seriously. Writers make a show great. And in “The Office” writers also ended up acting. BJ Novak plays the ‘temp’ Ryan, Paul Lieberstein played the HR Toby Flenderson and Mindy Kaling played Kelly Kapoor. The show runner Greg Daniels believed that Writers are the best people to do justice to their own stories/lines (not confirmed, just using names to legitimise my point).
Dwight played by Rainn Wilson will make your blood boil. He will surprise you with his eccentricity. He will come up with the most obnoxious lines and absurd acts. You will see him get pranked (a lot) by Jim and will also see his attempts to try to prank Jim. And yet, you will get inspired by his tenacity and doggedness in trying to achieve his goal. Undoubtedly one of the most memorable characters in the history of television. Okay, I know i am going overboard here but they hey it’s okay.
*Spoiler Alert* ( Actually no, this is not a spoiler alert)
For me, the ❤️ between Jim and Pam has to be one of the best representations of love on television. Any other series would have taken all 9 seasons to get them married, but “The office” doesn’t. We see what happens after they get married. We see their ambitions hitting crossroads and them fighting like a real couple. And when the times are tough, we see them doubting each other. It will break your heart, but you will gather the pieces and solider on. They will give you a laundry list of couple goals to follow. So watch the series just for that.
I had a few more points, but let me stop here and end this post with a rendition of why you should really watch the series:
Television content has exploded in the last few years. There is so much content being made by OTTs, Cable, Networks that a lifetime will not be enough to watch them all. And to be honest, that shouldn’t be the goal either. What gets made today on the pretext of being art is horrendous. They all seek our attention by making half-ass attempts at storylines and considering the audience to be dumb. The producers expect people to watch series as mindless content. The reason some of them come up with is “There is so much bad happening in the world right now” that we can come up with half-baked attempts and it will bring in the $$. We as audience deserve a lot more than that.
The world is a strange place today and there is so much hate prevalent that comedy has become the antidote. And “The Office” is the best antidote there ever was or will be.
You can watch the series on Amazon Prime in India and on Netflix in US.
